Editorial Review gives the Secondhand Lions score 4 Stars
and says :
A
particular highlight is the saddening, but beautiful performance
by Doyle's son, Patrick Doyle Jr. (whose voice is outstanding),
in the "She Was a Real Lion" cue. That performance is
the culmination of the story's touching, sentimental side,
reminding the listener that the storytellers who are offering
these adventures from their youths are themselves at the
twilight of their lives.
Collectors
of Doyle's work will not want to pass on this album; it
presents Doyle at his most adventurous, and for his fans
who have been frustrated with his primarily classical,
arthouse scores of recent years, Secondhand Lions will
be a welcome return to styles of times past.

Thomas
Kiefner of scorereviews.com also awards the Secondhand
Lions score with 4 stars .
Previews
of films can sometimes be very deceiving, particularly
in the case of Secondhand Lions. Little did I know what
was in store for me when I listened to this score for
the first time. What appeared in the previews to be
a comedy starring Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, and
Haley Joel Osment about a young boy who spends a summer
with his two eccentric uncles in Texas, turned out to
have a wonderful, varied score. Patrick Doyle, in a
recent Film Score Monthly interview was asked about
the recent scoring of this film. "How would I describe
it? Symphonic, comedic, atmospheric, swashbuckling,
mysterious and romantic; it's got every conceivable
type of music in it. It's been like writing 10 scores
in one!"

Matthew
Noske of filmreview.org enthuses :
I'm
totally hooked on this latest effort by Patrick Doyle.
It has now become my favourite work of his and I recommend
it to those who are still unfamiliar with Doyle and
want somewhere to begin. It's easy to listen to and
get swept away in its energy. On top of that the recordings
are first-rate. The short running time of 45-minutes
ensures that all 26 tracks are precious and invaluable
but also leaves you yearning for more. If I had to sacrifice
the great enhanced features for more music then I'd
probably opt for that, but what we get now is quite
a good little package so I'm not complaining. There
are too many highlights to mention but rest assured
that there is something here for you. If you want to
know just how wide Doyle's range can go then pick yourself
up a copy of "Secondhand Lions" and hear the quality
for yourself.
