SHL - a review by Mc
My SHL story:

On my way to SHL

When I first heard about secondhand lions, I didn't know Haley yet,
I thought: hmm, another melodramatical feel-good / family movie.
So I forgot about it. Then, almost one year later. I saw A.I.: Artificial
Intelligence, and I loved it, also it had appeared to me that this little boy,
Haley Joel Osment, was a pretty good actor. I Googled him for some info
and found many many fansites. I found out he was already 16 and not the
little boy from A.I. anymore. I then bought the DVD of AI. Artificial
Intelligence, and The Sixth Sense. The sixth sense was another great
movie and again I was impressed by the little boy, I had also heard about
Pay It Forward, but decided to read the book first, and when I finished it,
(it was pretty good) I bought the pay it forward DVD. Another great movie,
and again, that little boy really impressed me. In meanwhile
I had found lots and lots of info about haley so I decided to make a fansite.
I did that and it was a great succes ( www.freewebs.com/hjosite
(moved to www.mc-online.info/pages/hjoindex.html now | it had
about 1700 visitors in 3 months ). When I had finished the site there was a
period of rest, ( not for me, but I didn't watch any movies etc.. ) I went to
another school, so I didn't have time for other things. (first things first).
When school had started for a while I planned on buying Secondhand Lions
next, and I visited every store in Haarlem (where I live, (in the
netherlands)), but no-one had it. I looked it up on the internet and found
out it wasn't for sale in the netherlands, only for hire. Shit, was my first
reaction, but I didn't want to give up too soon, so I started searching the
internet for a site where I could order Secondhand Lions. I found hundreds,
but on all of them you could only pay with a creditcard. And since I'm
sixteen I am not allowed yet, As you'll understand my second reaction
wasn't very different from the first. I had almost given up and as a last try
I posted my problem on two sites: www.moviemeter.nl
and www.comeawayohumanchild.net/forum/index.php
With one of those posts I had succes..

SHL through mc's eyes:

The Director:
When I heard that SHL was directed by McCanlies I didn't know what to
expect because he's a more actionmovie type of Director and most of the
times feel-good / family movies and action movies don't go together. Now
that I've seen it I think McCanlies choice to Direct the movie himself was
the best choice he could make.

The Characters:

Haley Joel Osment (Walter):
This character doesnt need too much explaination. Off course it was a
great choice to take Haley for the character of Walter, a teenager growing
up to be a man, because Haley is actually going through that right now.
I really liked the way he acted his looking interested when Garth was
telling him the stories.

Robert Duvall (Hub):
I have been a fan of Robert Duvall for a long time, I love his acting in
Apocalypse now, so I was happily surprised when I heard he was going to
play the Old Uncle. Because it seemed like another great role for him, and
it was.

Michael Caine (Garth):
I like Michael Caine, though I have always thought he's a little uhh, quiet,
In his movies he's never the real hero. When I saw The quiet american I
was very impressed by michael caine's acting so it also gave me high
expectations of him, in this movie.

The Movie itself.

When I started watching I was a little carefull not to get too high
expectations of a movie that could have been just like all of the other
feel-good movies, but during watching my view on the movie changed from
feel-good to a story about growing up, a story that has a great value. A
story, I think, in which Director McCanlies has put a lot of himself.
Because all characters where going through actually the same thing they
are going through in the movie, made it very realistic. If someone's not
sure about himself he should see this movie to know what's wrong and
right. The idea in Director McCanlies head that started like and idea for
something else, not like all other hollywood action movies, turned out to be
a realistic look in the life of a boy getting dropped of at his two uncles who
teach im how to be a real man. This movie is worth seeing for everyone. I
recommend it!

Here's my original review of Secondhand Lions. I seem to love that film. Smile

Lions is the real deal

I had some really high expectations of Haley Joel Osment's new film. I didn't catch the movie in theatres, and deliberately waited to own the DVD and see it all by myself. It was a reasonable yet manageable long wait, and it was worth it.

Secondhand Lions tells about Walter - a shy boy who is dumped by his mother to stay with his two elderly uncles who are said to have stashed away loads of money. Walter's been given the task to find out where all the money is kept, but he ultimately finds out there's much more important stories to be discovered.

Lions is basically a coming of age film, very much like the great Stand By Me, but there's some different and interesting things that really make Secondhand Lions special. First of all, the film totally delivers in the drama department, and there's really a lot of moments that will get to you. There are many moments of relief too, none of which are oddly placed in the story. The funny moments blend into the movie just perfectly, and they are never lessening the emotional impact the film has on its viewers.

Haley Joel Osment is once again doing an amazing job portraying the lead character by whom the story is told. Robert Duvall and Michael Caine are an amazing duo - their appearance in this film is almost vital - brilliant casting indeed.

It seems Haley is taking a short break with his movie career, which is understandable but hard to endure - I'd very much like to see more of him on the silver screen. Like with Pay it Forward and Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence, Secondhand Lions again proves Osment's ability to handle powerful films, and I can only strongly recommend you see Lions. You wouldn't want to miss out on it.

Secondhand Lions comes highly recommended. Don't miss it.

I've been too busy for a while. I again have some catching up to do. Smile

Quite a bit of my free time has gone into the work on my personal website, and I'm currently working on an online (turn based) game that can be played in a webbrowser. It's definitely taking away much of my free time. Oh, and I'm still alive in Word of Warcraft ofcourse.

But movies take most of my time, still. And now that I'm hearing the wonderful Jurassic Park score on my streaming winamp player, I think I should see another one this evening! Very Happy
