In Part 3 of The Rusty Gorman Interview, Rusty discusses the themes of Home of the Giants , the May 9th prerelease screening of the film, and tells us why post production on the film seemed to take so long...

Don't miss it !

Can you speak about any plans for the distribution of this film both domestically and internationally... there are so many international fans all clamouring for information about if this film will make it to their country . I'm from Singapore, and then we have fans as far away as the Netherlands , it's really amazing, the call for this film. Is there anything that you can say at this current time that will give us some hope that it will reach our shores ?

Rusty : I can't say too much at this point in time, because we are really right in the middle of it . The film is screening several times at Cannes, starting this Saturday ( May 19th 2007 ) , Conquistador Worldwide Entertainment is representing the film there. There is a lot of interest for the film here in the USA , domestically. We're waiting for some details to work themselves out, but I have high hopes. I have high hopes that the film will find a wide audience both here in the USA, and also internationally.

After reading this I immediately went to google and searched for Home of the Giants at Cannes and found this:

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2007

Saturday, May 19, 2007 (noon)
Home of the Giants
Conquistador, Olympia 2, 92 min.

Tuesday, May 22, 2007 (14:00)
Conquistador Worldwide, Star 1, 92 min.

Wednesday, May 23, 2007 (10:00)
Home of the Giants
Conquistador Worldwide, Olympia 5, 92 min.

What we learn from this:
Runtime of Home of the Giants: 92 minutes

Rusty : Oh yeah , I was very happy with the result. Being in a theatre with a large audience and hearing them react they laughed at the right moments, they jumped at the right moments. I saw the film working, the audience responding to the film in the way that we had intended for them to respond, and that was absolutely thrilling. Then afterwards, the overwhelming response was just how great the performances were. The responses that I heard were just how people loved the performances of our main characters, and that's really what it's all about from a directing standpoint. 90% is about casting it properly and then getting the performances. I think that's where we did our best work, that's our strong suit.

I'm so glad that the audience is reacting to this movie in the way that the makers wanted them too, just at the right moments. And that they thought that the performances are so great. This movie is going to do a lot of good for the careers of the main actors. Also great to here for people in the Netherlands, Singapore and other far away countries that Rusty has high hopes for a wide audience both domestically and internationally. Sounds like the ball is rolling for hotg and they're in the midst of finding distributors.

Home of the Giants opens with the Tom Petty song, "Mary Jane's Last Dance " Can you tell us why you chose that song to open your film, and how you managed to secure the rights to this song.

Wow, this song just really really fits the movie. I can just envision the beginning of the movie when I listen to this song. It has a whole indie feel to it, just perfect.

Here are some links where you can listen to samples of this song:
tompetty.com
amazon.com
bol.com

Tom Petty - Last dance with Mary Jane Lyrics

She grew up in a Indiana town,
Had a good lookin’ mama who never was around.
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night.

Well she moved down here at the age of eighteen,
She blew the boys away; was more than they’d seen.
I was introduced and we both started groovin’
She said, “I dig you, baby, but I got to keep movin’ - on.
Keep movin’ on.”

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain.
I feel summer creepin’ in and I’m tired of this town again.

Well I don’t know but I’ve been told, you never slow down, you never grow old.
I’m tired of screwin’ up, tired of goin’ down,
Tired of myself, tired of this town,
Oh my, my, oh hell yes - Honey put on that party dress.
Buy me a drink, sing me a song,
Take me as I come . cause I can’t stay long.

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain.
I feel summer creepin’ in and I’m tired of this town again.

There’s pigeons down on Market Square,
She’s standing in her underwear.
Lookin’ down from a hotel room,
Nightfall will be coming soon.
Oh my, my, oh hell yes, you got to put on that party dress.
It was too cold to cry, when I woke up alone.
I hit my last number, I walked to the road.

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain.
I feel summer creepin’ in and I’m tired of this town again.

The facts that we learn from this interview:
Runtime of Home of the Giants: 92 minutes
Hotg is set in March
Hotg is set in the town of Riverton, Indiana (not Marion as some sites claim)
The cast has a great chemistry and really feed of each other.
Opening song is Last Dance with Mary Jane from Tom Petty.
Production took so long because of the struggle to find money.
Rusty has high hopes for a wide audience (domestically as well as internationally)
Has been screened 3 times on the Cannes Festival 2007
The reaction from the audience and companies at the May 9th screening was really great

btw, this interview is forwarded to Ryan Smile I'm sure that he'll enjoy reading it. His newsletter is coming in July and we might read some more about Home of the Giants in there.

oh and after finding out that Tom Petty did the opening song and I saw him on the end crawl for HotG. I started googling some of the names on that end craw. I came up with these musicians.

Wayne Coyne (flaming lips)
Scott Brooker (flaming lips)
Eric Blumenfeld
Kim Britt
Matt Dee (probably from Matt Dee and the Invisibles, indie rock band)
Ray Harris
Tammy Hoffman
Richard Kaplan
Mark Lane
Phil Sizemore

Wow .... Ryanne .... you sure did a lot of work after reading the interview . Thank you for your enthusiasm and support Smile

You virtually did a mini "Cliff Notes" analysis for the film from this interview .... LOL .

You were a little off on a couple of things though ... for example ....

wow, I'm going to watch these movies and a lot of other sports movies. I've always been a sport movie fan. Well, now we've learned that hotg is so much more than just a sports movie and it's looking really good.

Neither of the last two names (in bold) are musicians on the movie. There may be musicians out there with those names, but those people are definitely not them. They are not listed in the music section of the credits.

Movies related to hotg mentioned in this article:
American Graffiti
Hoosier
Raging bull
Rudy

As for the above movies mentioned in the article, ALTHOUGH Rusty did mention those films during the course of his interview , they are in no way comparable to what Home of the Giants is like . In fact, a good friend of mine who has seen the film has said, after hearing your comparison of Home of the Giants to Rudy :

Quote:
I will wager large amounts that nobody will find this movie to be anywhere similar to that terrible Rudy movie of years ago. Yuck. Hoosiers, sure, but Rudy, never!!!

LOL .

Home of the Giants is much better, Ryanne , don't worry , and you are going to enjoy it much more ! Very Happy

Wow again... some more really great information. I am glad they were able to bring the film to Cannes and all the representatives that were there, and get a few screenings for those that need to see the film. With any luck, there just might be some good news to come of it.

Also some interesting stuff about Tom Petty... I was not aware that he was a bit of a film buff, and how generous of him to want to help out the film the way that he did.... and I think that speaks quite highly of the quality of the work, and the people involved with this project.

Of the three parts to the interview, I think this third installment was probably the most informative, and had the most depth, as Mr. Gorman really seemed to respond to the questions presented. Great stuff danchia, very professional and well presented.

For Mr. Gorman's first interview about the film, I do not think we could ask for anymore. Now I have to go read all three parts together.

FAIR WROTE :

"Hoosiers" is a great film to see, especially as a primer for HotG. It will put into the proper context what basketball means to "small-town" Indiana, especially if you did not grow up in that type of culture.

Like me for example, being from Canada, I grew up in a hockey culture and not basketball. But what I saw in "Hoosiers" is pretty much what hockey means to "small-town" Canada. Perhaps in the Netherlands it is all about football, which you can then apply to the depth of support and how basketball defines their culture. Hmmmm... hopefully that made sense.

But... even if there was no HotG, "Hoosiers" is a really great film and should be seen anyway! I plan on watching it again soon, and probably a few more times before I see HotG whenever that happens.

I agree, Fair. I myself have not seen Hoosiers yet, but I think I'll order the dvd from amazon.com right away . It will be interesting to learn about the basketball culture in Indiana . I live in Singapore , and we don't have much of a sports culture to speak off .... maybe a little local football , but certainly nothing that grips the entire population like Basketball would in Indiana . Thanks for the recommendation Smile

Yes you're right. I didn't really meant in comparison to hotg. Rusty didn't compare them to hotg in the interview. lol I don't know what I meant, hehe, maybe just good movies to watch. I'll definitely check out Hoosiers and American Graffiti.

I just saw Friday night lights. Ryan said in an interview that what football was in Friday night lights, basketball is in Home of the Giants. That everybody is so obsessed about it, worshiping the stars, it's part of the culture, the entire town is empty when they're playing the game. It's a very good movie and I enjoyed it very much.

I know you didn't , Ryanne Smile

I just wanted to make things a little clearer , in case some others misread you and thought that you were comparing the films directly with Home of the Giants Smile

I thought your summary of the trivia about the film from Rusty's interview was very cool ! Thanks for sharing what you did ! Smile
