INTRODUCTION
Starting this month, Come Away O Human Child is offering its own dedicated IRC channel. This basically allows everyone here to discuss various Come Away related things (or just chat) with other members or interested people, in glorious realtime chat.
The Come Away IRC channel is available 24 hours a day, 360 days a year. It is easy to connect to and use - and it is always there if you want to chat with members, friends or other people.
CLIENTS
To connect to the Come Away IRC channel you'll need to use an IRC client. This is a small application that runs on your computer and allows you to connect to an IRC server. If you are using Windows, you could try the fully free and open-source X-Chat 2 (get it here on www.silverex.org) or non-free shareware mIRC (www.mirc.com). If you are using a Mac with OS X, you could use the also fully free Colloquy (get it here on www.colloquy.info). For Linux, you could use the fully free x-chat (available at www.xchat.org).
HOW TO CONNECT AND JOIN THE COME AWAY CHANNEL
Start your IRC client, and connect to the IRC server irc.freenode.net (let your client use the default IRC port 6667). Then, simply join the channel #comeaway (make sure to include the pound # character in the channel name!). The direct command to join the #comeaway channel would be /join #comeaway
Please note that #comeaway will not list as a publicly available channel when you list irc.freenode.net's available channels. It is hidden - just join the channel manually.
SETTING UP CHAT SESSIONS
You can always connect to IRC and join the Come Away channel to see if there are currently people around to chat with. However, if you want to be sure there are people in the channel when you want to chat, it could be recommended to post a suggestion for a chat session right here, in this IRC subforum.
Please note that people who seem available/present in the channel might not actually be directly available for chat at that specific time. Some people will leave their alias 'active' in the channel, even though they are temporary away or unavailable. You can still enter messages in the channel, making them available for when these people become active again.
IRC TUTORIAL
Chatting on IRC is easy and intuitive, and you will probably feel right at home using your Windows, Mac or Linux client. However, if you wish to learn more about IRC and its usage, there are some easy and useful tutorials out there like this one.
