Hi all,

I thought it would be great revisiting some old discussion topics that we had over at the old dreamsworks fansite, which drew thousands of posts over 2 years, about the many brilliant, deep and complex themes that run through A.I.

The film looks deceptively straightforward and simple, but understanding some of these questions are vital to the proper appreciation of one of the finest films every made.

So.... I am starting off by asking this question, " Were there aliens at the end of A. I ? "

They were in the minds of the people who were too busy hating Speilberg to pay attention to the plot. I shouldn't talk though, it wasn't till after I left the theater that I found out they were mecha. my friend said, I don't think they were aliens and I said WOW of course... they were robots.

Wow.... now I don't feel so bad ! To be truthful, I thought that they were aliens too ! It was only later, reading the discussions on the dreamworks fansite, that it finally hit me , and POW ! That revelation made everything fall into place ! Suddenly I understood the depth of the third act ... it suddenly all made sense to me, and till today, I am still moved by it ! Smile

Sorry for bringing up a long dead topic, but if you realize it or not, the logo/monument for Cybertronics in the very beginning of the movie, as well as what David draws, is actually a representation of the mechas at the end, and being that Cybertronics sports the logo, wouldn't it be right to assume that these mechas were in some odd way a project of Cybertronics? After all, in the end, they are trying to search for links to their existence. Just a little insight, I suppose.

Good observation. I think the association between the Cybertronics statue and the Supermecha is suggestive of the evolutionary subtext of the film. Like the scene in the Cybertronics building when you can see the silouette of the Cybertronics statue above the unfinished David in the chair, as if it is spouting from its head. They were David's descendents in a sense. They could have started off as a creation of Cybertronics, but it had been a millinium since Davids creation and the robots displayed their own inquisitivness and "self-motivated reasoning". I think they represented the end result of that vision and in their search for understanding of Orga they, like their creators, were looking for meaning.

Exactly. Actually, once before, I found a very good site that tracked the symbolism in A.I. If I can find it again, I'll give you all the URL.

I thought they were aliens too when I first saw them flying over the ice. Like on an archaeological dig. But I realized that they were the future mecha's when that one was talking to David about how humans must at least be the key to their existance. I had my suspicion confirmed when I watched the bonus DVD with all the interviews etc...

I found out some more stuff when I watched A.I again. A line that Joe says gives some hints to the ending. "The ones who created us are looking for the one who created them." At the end, the specialist (the main mecha guy) says how he envied the human race, and by trying to bring them back, he was basically saying he wanted to understand his existence. Pretty neat stuff we're dealing with here.

at first i thought they were aliens my self but then i took a good look at then i said no wait a min they have to be future mechas or super mechas because i remember the big bird with wings. (does this ring a bell) lol. well that who they looked like. and i also remember what joe said that in the end all there will be is us and thats why they hate us. speech. to david.
and yes your right david is like related to them in a sense. this movie was done with artistry and such a masterpiece. it is truly a movie that cant touch your heart. and i for one would love to see a another a.i.2 i think it would be great.

An A.I. II? I don't think that would work. David got what he wanted: he was able to die like humans, in a way, becoming human himself. I don't think that one would be able to pick up from that.

yes, I think Alain is right, it just would not work to try and make A.I.2. The ending was too final. And besides even if it could be done I don't think anyone but Haley would work for me as David, and Haley is too old for that part now anyway.

A sequal to AI is possible but it would not be about David, but about some peripheral character or a completely unassociated event.

Therefore, none of the previous fans would be too interested. We connected with David. We shared our hopes and dreams with David. I do not think another event or person would go over to well....

That would be cool to see puzu... Maybe see what becomes of Joe, the Swintons or how humans end up being replaced by the mechas. Sort of like some of the stuff in those short fans novels on this site. But Alain is right, at least as far as I'm concerned. David was the one I connected with and anything else would be interesting and even cool to watch if it was done well. But it wouldn't get me the way A.I. did.
