Synopsis:
This film was originally released in 2001. The following is from
the DVD cover:
| "Haley
Joel Osment ("Secondhand Lions," "A.I. Artificial
Intelligence," "The Sixth Sense") and Willem
Dafoe ("The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," "Spider-Man")
star in Edges of the Lord, an inspiring and enthralling story
from Millennium Films and Miramax Home Entertainment. To escape
an unthinkable fate, a young Jewish boy's (Osment) parents send
him to the countryside. Spirited away from the Nazi occupied
city in a gunnysack, he's taken in by a kind village farmer
with children of his own, masquerades as the farmer's nephew
and is coached by the parish priest (Dafoe). Filled with outstanding
performances and brilliantly written, this triumphant film is
sure to capture your heart." |

So... four years
later since this film first premiered in the theatre in Poland (Oct.
2001), where the film was shot almost five years ago, it finally
washes up on the shores of North America. If nobody minds, I think
I will offer up a few of my own thoughts and comments.
It is unfortunate
that the majority of people in North America will never even know
this film exists. It would have been nice for this film to have
had even a limited theatrical release, but such is life in the big
business world of the film industry, and this film just might find
some life on DVD. With it now available on DVD, that may clear the
way for it to show up on television at some future point... well,
we can always hope.
Even though
this is a small film when compared to some of Haley's other work,
the whole experience he had surrounding this film certainly left
an impression on him. Of course the obvious would be the experiences
and lessons he learned about the film industry when dealing with
the major studio's as an actor/artist. Although that experience
was not the best, I have little doubt that he did not at least take
something away, which will help him as an adult actor at some point
down the road. But, there were also some more personal experiences
that had an impact on his life.

Because Haley
is such a professional, and the amount of research he did to help
prepare himself for the role, it would seem this small little independent
film set during WWII was the major spark for him to take such a
keen interest in history. The research, and the whole experience
of filming this period piece in Europe, seemed to bring his interest
in history to life. More than just a passing hobby, the study of
history is a major focus of his high school life, and he very much
wants to continue that study during his soon to arrive college years.
If you recall some of his very first interviews, it appears that
history has replaced his early interest in things like zoology as
something he might like to study in college... then again, he still
might. Even some of the books he is reading outside of school are
focused on history, as can be found from this question and answer
from one of the interviews he gave while promoting Secondhand
Lions :

| Quote:
Question:
"I understand you are a good student and love to read. What
are you reading right now?"
Haley Joel
Osment:
"Historical novels mostly, because I'm going to be concentrating
on history later on in high school and hopefully in college too.
I finished the Abraham Lincoln biography, and I was reading some
Steven Ambrose earlier this year, so I'm trying to get into that
before I start taking the classes."

It is
so wonderful that most of the experiences he had surrounding
this film were such a very positive influence on his life.
For these reasons, I think "Edges" was a very special
film for him to be involved, and that the film probably means
a great deal to him.
